RACE REPORT

PRACTICE & QUALIFYING

Only her second experience ever at Sepang, Claire’s aim for Practice was to clean up her racing lines and to find her optimum braking points while navigating heavy traffic. New tyres helped to set her best lap time against 33 more experienced drivers, and setting her goal for the race weekend. During qualifying with scrubbed older tyres; Claire managed a respectable P11 in her class.

RACE 1

With few expectations, Claire’s first ever race started in the wet on soft suspension and new semi-slick tyres. At the rolling start, Claire’s quick thinking avoided a stalled car but dropping back 3 positions as a result. With the sole aim of finishing her first race without incident, Claire stuck to her racing lines and avoided unnecessary risks. A well fought race saw Claire taking the 1.6L cars on the straights and only lost to the late brakers at the first and final turns. As the track dried up, Claire dug deep to gain more courage and speed, despite her lack of experience in the wet-dry conditions. Her composure allowed the over-eager late brakers go past, only to watch them lose control later in the fast changing track conditions. In Lap 5 at T13, Claire fought some understeer and veered ever so slightly off the track, but regained control quickly to recover her position. Much to the joy and celebration of the Team, Claire took the chequered flag in P16.

RACE 2

Claire’s second race was the real test of her training with a dry start. Starting on the outside, Claire skillfully took the traffic bunched on the inside line and made several passes for better position, only to be swamped by 1.6L’s into T1. The next 5 Laps were focused on tight battling with Malaysian’s Honda Factory Driver Aaron Lim and Proton Factory Driver James Veerapen. In Lap 6, Veerapen made contact with Claire’s front right wheel in a manoeuvre in T4, resulting in a bent tie rod and offsetting the steering. The incident saw an unfortunate lost of 3 positions Claire as she fought hard to keep the car from constant understeering to the left. Despite the incident, Claire managed to pick up points, finishing 10th  in Category and 13th  overall.

Summing up her rookie weekend, Claire had this to say, ““Our aim was to keep the car on the track despite a wet Race 1, and I put my training to the test in Race 2. The weekend went well, I enjoyed myself and my next goal is to improve on my driving for the next round in the MSS and start pushing harder. Thank you my sponsors, crew, friends and family for all the support!"
