Ex-Beyond guitarist booted off singing contest

Hong Kong - Former Beyond guitarist Paul Wong has the dubious distinction of being the first star booted off I Am A Singer, a new Hunan TV contest for professionals.

He ranked seventh in the second week of the show last Friday, after singing a rock version of Jacky Cheung's Goodbye Kiss, said Ming Pao Daily News.

Wong was placed third in the first week, performing Beyond's Broad Sky.

Netizens cast doubt on his elimination, however, noting that the show did not make known the tally of votes from 500 members of the audience. Others said he should not have sung Goodbye Kiss as a rock number.

I Am A Singer is an attempt by Hunan TV, one of the most popular stations in China, to reclaim the genre.

Hunan TV's influential talent show Super Girl was suspended in 2009, after being repeatedly punished for being "vulgar".

Zhejiang TV's The Voice Of China, which is based on the Dutch show, is now the most popular singing contest.

I Am A Singer, the Chinese version of the Korean contest, features contestants including Taiwanese singer Chyi Chin and mainland pop duo Yu Quan.

According to a report on NetEase website, Wong will be replaced by singer Aska Yang, a former contestant of Taiwanese talent show One Million Star.
