VIDEO: Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins to a smashing progression - Wrestling?

Billy Corgan and Resistance Pro make a rather strange marriage indeed. What's Resistance Pro? It's an independent professional wrestling promotion company Corgan started in partnership with two brothers - Jacques and Gabe Baron - who are known fixtures in the indie wrestling leagues in Chicago.

Black Friday - their first show - debuted on Nov 25, 2011 at the Excalibur nightclub in Chicago where some of wrestling's bigwigs competed in the event.

Taking his new venture seriously, Corgan also used the event to launch a concussion-awareness programme tied to Resistance Pro, forming a partnership with Chicago's Concussion Coalition and medical practitioners at a local hospital with one aim: Looking after the physical and mental welfare of wrestlers before and after each event and educating wrestlers on the dangers of certain manoeuvres which could result in concussions.

For a fan who has stopped keeping track of Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins, this is certainly not a 'logical' progression for Corgan.

Was it not so long ago that we remember Corgan, the grunge icon, in all his gothic grunge glory, who sold nearly 20 million albums in the United States and toured the world many times over with the Smashing Pumpkins? Wasn't he and the Pumpkins also behind hits like Today, Cherub Rock, Mayonnaise, Disarm which was the staple of those growing up in the 1990s?

Corgan's obviously no stranger to weird ventures, having previously owned a tea shop and published poetry amongst other things. Watching this video made me wonder how, the once awe-inspiring Smashing Pumpkins frontman could resort to slapstick and even worse, feature in a (cloaked wrestling) TV advertisement for Walter E.  Smithe Furniture?

I'm just as surprised as you are. In all fairness though, it seems that Corgan's fascination with wrestling dates back to his childhood and the epic nature of this sport has certainly left quite an impression on him.

Your thoughts?

In the event that you've forgotten Corgan during the prolific years of the Smashing Pumpkins, here's Cherub Rock to jolt your memory:
